If you live in the U.S., the chances of missing out on the nation’s annual independence celebration are almost impossible, because fireworks, patriotic celebrations, decorations, and tributes remain as meaningful as the day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4th.
Northern neighbor Canada’s own annual commemorative celebration is held just three days earlier. On July 1, 1879, the "anniversary of Confederation," (renamed Dominion Day) gave that nation a reason to show off their maple-embellished symbols during what is now commonly referred to as Canada Day.
Why look back at these landmark dates with awe? Because not every nation in the Western Hemisphere was lucky enough to have found its own version of Independence Day hundreds of years ago. In Belize, for example, this long-awaited day didn't finally arrive until September 21, 1981.
